  • No GBM This Week.
    The General Body Meeting for this week has been canceled, thus, concluding our GBMs for this school year. We look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday night, April 24th, at BGSA's Spring 2008 Recognition Night (details below)!

  • General Body Meeting
    Thurs. April 10, 2008 - 11am-12noon
    Student Services Bldg - Room 117
    We will be holding elections for next year's executive board at our next general body meeting. Please send in all nominations to Shara by Tuesday, April 8th, at 5 pm. (Yes, you can nominate yourself.) The ballot will be sent out to membership that evening and give a chance for all nominees to either decline/accept nominations. All nominees will be giving a brief 2-3 minute speech for their position, even if it is uncontested. The presidential nominees will get 5 minutes each for their platforms. Please visit our missions page for our constitution, which outlines each position. Also, feel free to contact the current position holder for a more detailed account of what each position does.We are asking everyone to step up to the plate and become the next wave of BGSA leaders!!
    As usual, lunch will be provided.

    We hope everyone enjoyed their spring break! This week's GBM topics are as follows:
    1) Dr. Adjo Amekudzi from the CEE department will be speaking about taking your research to the next level and maximizing your graduate school experience.
    For those that were unable to make the meeting, a copy of Dr. Amekudzi's presentation can be found here.

    2) We will also be taking nominations for the 2008-2009 BGSA Executive Board. Please visit Our Mission page to find our constitution, and information about the BGSA executive board positions. This is an excellent way for you to maximize your career at Tech, enhance professional skills, and serve your fellow Black graduate students. Nominations can also be sent to the BGSA secretary Shara McClendon until April 10th.
    As always, lunch will be provided.

  • [GT]^2 Kick-Off General Body Meeting
    Thurs. March 6, 2008 - 11am-12noon
    Student Services Bldg - Room 117
    Meeting Topic: This week is our annual [GT]^2 Symposium (March 6th - 8th). This Thursday, we will kickoff with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, as they come and speak on opportunities with them, as well as other surprises :-) Be sure to come out and support [GT]^2! As always, lunch will be provided.

    When: This Sunday February 24, 2008 at 7pm
    Why: To get out and play pool, spades, taboo, scrabble, Connect 4, Twister, Pictionary, etc. with your BGSA family! And because we haven't done anything in a while!

    Meeting Topic: Black History Month: Leaving a Legacy
    1) We will likely be having a guest alumnus speaker to come and speak on setting up a company and foundation for scholarships.
    2) In honor of Black history month, we will be challenging our members to think about what legacy they are leaving behind and some ways to start planning now, such as maximizing alumni connections.
    Lunch will be provided.

  • BSO Black History Month Events
    The Georgia Tech Black Student Organizations, BSO (which includes BGSA, AASU, ASA, CaribSA, etc.), has many events in honor of Black History Month! Here is the offical 2008 BSO Black History Month Calendar.
    Some of the events include:
    • Mayor Shirley Franklin here on 2/23 at 2pm, in the GT Student Center Ballroom
    • The annual Onyx Ball, on 2/29 at the Biltmore Hotel at 9pm.

  • National Black Arts Festival
    BGSA encourages everyone to get out and visit the National Black Arts Festival during Black History Month. The NBAF is actually a year-around cultural celebration. Come experience the dance, music, film, theater, visual arts, and literary arts of Africa and the African Dispora.

    Meeting Topic: The Current US Presidential Race
    We will highlight and give stats on issues of importance in the current presidential race. We will have short discussion on economic, health care, education, and border/immigration issues. We will pass out information with current positions of presidential candidates. Lunch will be provided.

  • 6th Annual Georgia Tech Graduate Technical Symposium - [GT]^2
    When: March 6-8, 2008
    Where: Georgia Tech Technology Square Research Bldg.

    We are pleased to announce the 2008 [GT]^2 Symposium! The symposium will be held March 6-8th here at Georgia Tech in the TSRB Bldg. This year's symposium revolves around the theme:
    "Innovation, Globalization, and Research: Adapting to an Ever-Changing World."
    We will be awarding over $2000 in prizes, not to mention door prizes and ipod giveaways!
    We look forward to seeing you at the 2008 [GT]^2 Symposium!

  • FOCUS Weekend: January 17-20, 2008 (MLK Weekend)
    Location: Georgia Tech Hotel
    The main goal of FOCUS is to give prospective minority graduate students an opportunity to visit Georgia Tech and participate in the King celebration.
    BGSA is currently looking for volunteers for many of the events this year.

    GT-BGSA Alumni Panel-- New to FOCUS!!
    What: A panel with GT-BGSA graduate alumni to talk with them and ask questions about life after grad school. This is an open forum to talk with past BGSA members who have completed their graduate degrees and can give advice on how to choose a career path, personal life, or any other topics you want to discuss. Lunch provided!

  • MLK Talent Show sponsored by AASU
    January 19th, 9-11pm
    Georgia Tech Hotel Ballroom

    In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, the Georgia Tech African American Student Union will be hosting a talent show for your enjoyment. Come out and support AASU, after the FOCUS events, and have a great time!

    This will be our last general body meeting of the Fall 2007 semester.
    Do you have some questions on how to be successful in this whole graduate school process?! Need some insight on how to make it through finals, quals, even your dissertation? Well, this week, we're bring some of your peers to help you and give you some advice on everything from the day-to-day to the last day. Come prepared with your questions! Afterwards, we want to have a breakout session for small-group conversations, so everyone who has any advice, come to the meeting and share!

    The Fall '07 semester is quickly coming to a close, which means that our biannual Recognition Night Event is fast approaching, and we all look forward to celebrating your success, achievements, and ability to go beyond the graduate status quo. Please continue to e-mail BGSA Rec Night Chair, Keith Reed (kgreed@gatech.edu) with the accomplishments of you and your peers for the Summer 2007 and Fall 2007 semesters. This may include:

    Meeting Topic - Educating our own: Afrocentric-based Nsoromma Saturday School
    This presentation will address:
    - What is African-centered education?
    - Why it's important and it's history?
    - What it looks like in classrooms, etc.
    - How Nsoromma has implemented it, including tying it into the Future Cities Engineering Competition in which we participated.
    - The Council of Independent Black Institutions (CIBI) conference.

    Friday, Nov. 9th, 5:00pm - 8:00pm
    Location: Six Feet Under, 685 11th St. (between Howell Mill and Northside)

    This will be our first Happy Hour of the semester! Food and soft drinks will be provided (you can buy your own "other drinks"). So come out, and start the weekend early with your BGSA family! Chill, relax, mix & mingle, and eat some calamari, wings, seafood quesadillas, chicken and more!
    As long as it doesn't rain, we'll be outside on their patio. BE THERE!

    1) Mr. Haley will speak for a few minutes on the annual FOCUS Program in which the purpose is to recruit minority undergrad students to attend graduate school at Georgia Tech. FOCUS this year will be held January 17-20 2008

    BGSA, and the rest of the BSO at Georgia Tech, will be tailgating before the 12pm homecoming game against Army. Food, drinks, and fun with the whole BSO community! Come out even if you don't plan on going to the game!

    Meeting Topic: More than Race: Are we a Reactionary People?
    In light of all the events in the news currently (Don Imus, Vick, Jena6, Shaquanda Cotton, Sean Bell, Technique article, R. Kelly, etc.), its time to reflect on ourselves and our actions. What happens in our everyday lives that keeps the rest of world ignorant of the underlying issues? Do we really promote the objectives set forth by race/culture-based organizations? Why do we fight for "RACE" sometimes ignoring what is "RIGHT"?
    Come to the meeting to voice your opinion, as well as LISTEN and HEAR the opinion of others...
    *****Don't Forget!!! Georgia Tech is holding an institute-wide clothing drive for those less fortunate. Clean out your closet and bring your donations to the BGSA meeting for collection. Gently used business attire is especially in need.

  • Q&A with Dr. Randal Pinkett
    Dr. Randal Pinkett, winner of NBC's "The Apprentice" Season 4, will be on campus October 19 to speak to Georgia Tech students. Dr. Pinkett holds numerous degrees from Rutgers, MIT, and Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. His extensive training led him to wear many hats as an entrepeneur, author, engineer, and computer scientist. The event will begin at 9:30am in the Student Center Theater. In addition, the FIRST 100 GT students to attend this event will receive his book Campus CEO (http://www.kaptest.com/oneoff/campus-ceo/index.jhtml). He will sign books following the remarks and Q&A.

  • $$$$ Graduate Fellowship Money $$$$ !
    Want to get paid just to be in grad school? There are MANY graduate fellowships with deadlines approaching (Oct. - Feb.), for all students as well as those for minorities only. Just an FYI, many of these fellowships pay your tuition and fees, and give you an addtional stipend around $20K to $40K a year! Students are living nicely off of fellowships like NSF, NASA, Ford, etc...

She is at the peak of her profession, as she has consistently been one of the top 10% of Realtors® in her office.

  • GT-IDEA Presents: "The Scattered Seeds of Africa" - African Reclamation through Panel Discussion
    Wednesday September 26th @ 7pm
    Georgia Tech Student Center Ballroom
    Join Afric@Tech and the Atlanta Black SOURCE in our second official forum to engage in a discussion and a celebration of African Heritage. Topics will range from why separations have emerged, our different identities, and how we can become more united.

    Performers include: Shelby Bernard, (Poet, Ga Tech); Alpha Phi Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc (Step Performance, Clark Atlanta); Next Phase, (Hip Hop Dance, Emory); Ill Lyterati, (Spoken Word Troupe, Morehouse); Ashietu, (African Dance, Spelman); I am Hip Hop (Spoken Word, Ga State); and much much more!

  • South Atlanta Tutorial Program
    BGSA has been organizing a tutoring program for the students of South Atlanta High School for the past few years. The program continues all throughout the 2007-2008 school year. This is a great opportunity to aid students academically as well as to be a positive role model for Atlanta’s youth.
    What: Tutoring: Chemistry, Biology, Algebra and Geometry to 9th & 10th grade
    When: Mondays and Wednesdays 3:15 to 5:15pm, throughout the 2007-2008 academic year
    Where: Meet at the BSO office in the Student Center Rm 331, at 3:00pm to carpool to South Atlanta High School.

    The production "STOMP" is coming to the FOX Theatre September 18-23, 2007.

    BGSA will be going as a group to the showing on Wed, Sept. 19th, at 8:00pm. Tickets are $34 and money will be collected Tuesday Sept. 18th between 11am-12pm in the BSO office (3rd floor of student center).
    Everyone who is going should meet at the BSO office at 6pm on Wednesday to carpool over to the Fox Theater, tickets will be distributed at this time.

    If you did NOT give me your vouchers to Adaora Okwo, you must turn your own voucher in tothe GTAA ticket office Tuesday 9/4 to get an actual ticket for the game. If you did turn in your vouchers to Adaora, you can pick up your game ticket from her. An email will be sent (to the address on the back of your vouchers) for more info.

    The Graduate Student Picnic will be held at the Campus Recreation Center on Friday, 7 September 2007, from 4:30pm to 8:00pm. There will be FREE FOOD for graduate students as well as some free T-shirts and other giveaways. Bring your families and enjoy the CRC Leisure Pool or just get to know other graduate students. BE THERE!

    Fri. morning, Sept. 14, 2007
    1) Gentlemen - There is an excellent opportunity for you to be a positive role model for the young men at Centennial Elementary through the Champions program. This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in mentorship. They are kicking off their “Men Do Read” program next Friday morning, September 14, 2007 where you can share the joy and importance of reading with these young men.
    2) Ladies – The above mentioned program targets men but there are other reading programs which we can participate in if enough interest is generated so e-mail Ayanna if mentoring children or reading to them is something that appeals to you.

  • BGSA Block Seating at GT Football Games
    If you would like to have block seating with BGSA at the games, you can give your vouchers to Adaora Okwo. You can pick up vouchers for football tickets from the GTAA ticket office (corner of Bobby Dodd and Techwood). There will be an envelope on the BGSA door (3rd floor student center where you can drop off your vouchers. EVERYONE, PLEASE RIGHT YOUR NAME AND EMAIL ADDRESS ON THE BACK OF EACH VOUCHER (i.e. your name and email address should appear 7 times).
